Your iPad can have some great apps for communication.

Mail

Mail is one of the built-in apps and is used to check your email. Mail can easily connect to GMail, MobileMe, Yahoo, AOL, Microsoft Exchange or any other standard POP3 or IMAP mail account (which covers pretty much everything) You can collect mail from more than one email account.

FaceTime

FaceTime allows you to make video calls between any iOS device that has a camera. It only works in a WiFi zone (not 3G) but the call quality is amazing. To make a call, just select someone from your address book (they need to have another FaceTime capable device obviously) and click the FaceTime button. The call costs nothing to talk as long as you like and can be made to any Mac or iOS device. iPad version works on the iPad 2 only.

Twitter

Twitter is a social network that uses short 140 character "microblog" messages to communicate. Many people don't quite "get" Twitter at first and it has gained a reputation for being full of inane nonsense, but if you are selective about who you add to your network it can be a source of great information. Importantly, many other iPad apps work better if they can be connected to an active Twitter account.

Google+

Google+ is Googles recent entry into the social networking space. It features a unique method of managing friendship groups called Circles which allows you to be far more selective about what you share and with whom. The iPad app is still not as good as the iPhone app, but an update is coming soon.

Skype is famous video calling tool. It has versions for regular computers and phones, but only recently became available for the iPad. Skype allows text chat, voice calls and video calls to other Skype enabled devices as well as regular telephones. Works on the iPad 2 only.
